lit review

Hi everyone,

I think the literature review is excellent and very thorough. I did some editing to it today, but I wanted to consult with the class before doing anything too drastic. It seems to me that it is too long, and that it becomes somewhat repetitive at the end. Also, it may just be my personal preference, but I would like to see us explain what our study is about in the last paragraph of the review. What does everyone think about these suggestions?

Data verication

Brenda and I worked on further data verification.  The Access database contained cases with incomplete and incorrect fields, for example, Familize Size of “0″ or “blank”, Ethnicity “0″ or “blank”, client age “0″ or “blank” , Zip Codes “0″ or blank” or missing termination date.  In some instances, the information was not Therascribe.  Therefore it required to retrieve the client’s file.

Clients that attended only one session were excluded from the Access database.

Brenda emailed both sets of data to Mary Sichi to run the SSPS again.

Draft of Paper

Hello all,

I went through the most recent drafts of the various parts of the paper, did some edits and put it all together. It is located in google docs as Draft of Paper 11.12.08 by Samantha. Please take some time to look it over and make further revisions. It was a bit hectic looking at various drafts and including them all, though I think I came pretty close. More eyes and heads are always better though. Right now we are missing a draft of the methods section, and I’m not sure about the results section. It seemed as though there were some results in with the discussion sections so I tried to pull those apart, but I’m not sure if I interpreted it correctly.

As a side note, when you open a document in google docs it automatically changes some of the formatting, but if you save it as a Word document the formatting returns to normal…usually anyway.

Due dates

Hello everyone,

Hope you all had a good weekend. I went through many of the pages on the wikispace and was unable to locate the page with the due dates for class. I have some tentative ones which we set during the first or second class meeting, which may or may not be applicable now. The first due date had to do with the literature review, which was November 25th, the Tuesday before Thanksgiving break. The second date, which, was set for the data collection to be completed and turned in, was the 3rd of December, the Weds after Thanksgiving. The whole project was to be due when class ended. Are these dates still what want? Or are there other ideas? Please leave a comment and let me know so I can place these on the calendar. Thanks all!

Article Reviews

Hello everyone!

Thanks to those of you who have already submitted yor article reviews, they’ve been great to read! In starting the Lit Review it is becoming clear that we need a bit more info. If you could look at your article and review and then tie it to our current resarch project, that would be great. Just a couple of statments about how/why you think it would be helpful in the Lit Review. If you could e-mail those to me that would be wonderful! And….if you could get them to me by Tuesday evening I’d think you were totally awesome!

Thanks!

Sections for Research Paper

Please use google docs to save the most recent drafts of your sections for the research paper. Just log-in to gmail using our class account (OLLUresearch fall2008), click on documents and upload from your computer. Please save drafts with the date and your name so we can keep track of the most recent versions. If you have not already done so, please log into the account, select a document and share it with yourself by entering your OLLU e-mail. This will add you as a collaborator so that you can work on various documents as needed. You may also want to share the document you upload with others in the class who are working on the same section. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks, Samantha

Data analyis for research project

I ran the data in SPSS using an ANOVA, and the results are in– hypothesis was correct. There are no significant differences in the number of sessions across presenting problem categories. The overall mean was 3.87 sessions. I will bring the specific results to class on Wednesday. I also ran some demographic stats on our sample that can be included in the methodology section. I will bring those as well.

New Drafts/Outlines

I have posted the tentative outline we generated in the last class in a folder in Google Docs. I have also started skeleton versions of the drafts for the Intro, Lit review, and Methods sections. Much of the material from the earlier drafts you have been working on can be cut and pasted into the lit review and intro sections.

I have tried to help the paper take on the desired focus and give you some organizing principles for the final draft. As I can get to it, I will cut and paste some of the material myself. If you beat me to it, please label your new drafts with your initials and date.

I have not done much more than outline the methods section.

I am looking forward to the next drafts.

Minor Revisions

I agree with Laura that the lit review is excellent…it’s just very well written.  Just fyi, I did some minor editing, briefly. To try to address the issue of different drafts floating around in cyberspace, I made my suggestions via inserted comment, which was done in google documents (not by saving the paper, changing it, and reuploading).  After I made changes I hit the “save and share” button.

When google documents is opened, if you click on All Items, it will show all the documents chronologically. So it shows what has been changed today, and what was changed yesterday.  Today it shows my recently changed (slightly) version of the paper. Dr. Bobele, I don’t know if that helps or not.

Seriously, good writing, lit review people!

Plan for Wednesday

Ok, here is a plan, a few of us coordinated to meet after class to continue work on a project for the wiki in a location equipped with wifi due to problematic connections in the classroom. Seeing as how our due dates are coming up and Mary has sent me the data needed to be entered on the wiki how would you all feel about meeting at Lisa’s around 1:00, as we are all usually hungry by then, to work on the project?

Lisa’s is wifi ready and we should have no problems getting on the internet and or having space to work. If you are working on your own contributions to the wiki or other parts of the research project for class, please do not feel obligated to come.

However, I will have my cell phone with me while we work if for any reason you need to contact us. 210-542-4616, or if i for some i do not hear mine, Kim will have hers as well. 512 762-7916.

Reminder about email accounts

I just wanted to remind everyone that you should avoid using any of your private email accounts for class business. Please use your OLLU email accounts for Google Docs as well.

On a related note, please keep your OLLU email account cleaned up. Some people are not getting their updates from Google Docs because of full mailboxes.
